The Commonwealth works with member countries to promote democracy, good governance, peace and the rule of law. Here are some of our programmes in these areas. Promoting Democracy Building, supporting and strengthening legal systems and good governance in our member countries is a key aim of the Commonwealth. Office of Civil and Criminal Justice Reform We work to transform the operation of justice systems and delivery of justice across the Commonwealth and ensure equal access to justice for all. Promotion and Protection of Human Rights We support member countries to promote, protect and respect internationally recognised human rights principles, standards and practices. Promoting the Rule of Law Heads of Governments and Law Ministers set mandates to strengthen rule of law, effective administration of justice and best practice in the Commonwealth. Countering Violent Extremism We support international efforts to counter violent extremism in all its forms, which Commonwealth Heads of Government have affirmed represents a serious threat to international peace and security. Commonwealth Cyber Declaration Programme The Cyber Declaration sets out the commitments made by Heads of Government at CHOGM 2018 to support a cyberspace that promotes economic and social development, and rights online. Strengthening Public Sector Governance The Commonwealth works with national authorities to uphold transparency and accountability in public services. We pay particular attention to strengthening anti-corruption agencies, and public administration and financial management systems in small and less developed countries. Tackling Corruption The Commonwealth helps governments, judges, the police and other public institutions tackle systemic corruption by sharing best practices, training and policy research. Commonwealth Database on International Cooperation in Criminal Matters International cooperation is critical in investigating crimes that have a transnational element.
