Yesterday, The Commonwealth Secretariat welcomed representatives from High Commissions across London for an open day showcasing the Trade, Oceans and Natural Resources Directorate (TONR).
The work of the Secretariat’s TONR Directorate ranges from trade and economic recovery to sustainable energy, natural resources and the preservation of our oceans.
The Commonwealth, with 54 countries, is home to 2.5 billion people, 60 per cent of whom are under the age of 30. Thursday’s event focussed on the very real challenges faced by all Commonwealth Members collectively, the strengths of the Commonwealth as a family of nations, and the opportunities to work together to build a better future.
Opening the event, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth said:
“Throughout the Commonwealth and beyond, there are serious challenges that affect our health, wealth and security. The impact of the pandemic has been severe, the impacts of climate change are profound and getting worse, with an ever-narrowing window for action, and violence, whether domestic, political or military, is a threat to human rights everywhere. In difficult times, we must focus on our strengths and our strengths are many. Our family of nations offers a platform for friendship and cooperation. From technical support and thought leadership to global advocacy, the Commonwealth Secretariat is here for you. TONR is here for you.”
During the event, the representatives of High Commissions in London were able to meet and discuss key issues with the various TONR teams, including those who work on the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda, International Trade Policy, Trade Competitiveness and Oceans and Natural Resources.
During the event, the Senior Director of TONR, Paulo Kautoke said:
“Today’s Open House is an opportunity to showcase some of the work that we do in your various countries. For members to ask us any question about our work, the successes and challenges that we have encountered, and what we see on the horizon. It also provides the opportunity to meet the team behind each of the workstreams and strengthen cooperation between the Secretariat and members but also between members of the Commonwealth.”
With the various challenges facing the Commonwealth and the world at the moment, this event offered an important opportunity for the Secretariat to provide a clear picture of the direct assistance that members can access, and to make the most of the real opportunities that lie ahead.
