Zambia

Zambia sits on a high plateau in south-central Africa. Its neighbours are the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United Republic of Tanzania, to the north and north-east, Malawi and Mozambique, to the east and south-east, Zimbabwe and Botswana, to the south, and Namibia and Angola, to the west. Zambia is a fertile country with many mineral reserves.

Elections support 

In October 2018, Zambia took part in Commonwealth Election Professionals (CEP) Initiative training. Participants learned about running fair and trusted elections, with a particular focus on involving men and women equally.

Climate change

The Secretariat supports Zambia to deliver climate action by building its capacity to access international climate finance through the Climate Finance Access Hub and supporting the development of robust climate policies.

Tackling corruption 

In May 2019, the Secretariat helped Zambia share best practice and new ideas to stop corruption with other countries in Africa.  

The Secretariat gave Zambia advice on preventing corruption in government, particularly when buying public goods and services.

Support for justice 

The Secretariat provided Zambia with a model law to help it make judicial appointments. It also helped Zambia to write and amend laws.

Youth 

The Secretariat Alliance of Young Entrepreneurs worked with young Zambians to explore priorities for increasing youth employment.  

The Secretariat Youth Programme helped Zambia set up youth work associations. A Commonwealth conference enabled participants to share knowledge and good practice on youth work.

The Secretariat's Hub and Spokes programme advised Zambia on trade in services and legal aspects of trade agreements.

The Secretariat has helped Zambia take part in consultations with the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

Connectivity Agenda

Zambia is a member of the Physical and Supply Side Connectivity clusters of the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda. The Connectivity Agenda is a platform for countries to exchange best practices and experiences to trade and investment and undertake domestic reform.

Zambia is a member of the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Alliance – the Blue Charter Action Group on tackling marine plastic pollution.

Zambia was the first African country to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 1979.
