Commonwealth leaders, emerging cricketers and local communities gathered at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua and Barbuda on Sunday, 1 November 2026, for a celebration of partnership, youth and shared purpose during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.

Hosted by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda as part of their Independence Day celebrations, the Exhibition Cricket Match Series drew inspiration from cricket legend, national hero and CHOGM 2026 Envoy, Sir Vivian Richards. The match also brought the CHOGM 2026 theme, “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth”, to life through one of the Commonwealth’s most cherished sporting traditions.

Leaders take to the field

The programme opened with a friendly T5 match between Caribbean leaders and their counterparts from the wider Commonwealth. H.E. Dr Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana, captained the Caribbean side, while Kenya's Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr Abraham Korir Sing'Oei led the wider Commonwealth team. Sir Vivian and former England captain David Gower were named Honorary Team Managers for the celebration. More than a sporting contest, the match offered a visible expression of inclusion, camaraderie and mutual respect.

The match began with a ceremonial coin toss conducted by His Majesty King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, marking the start of the cricket celebration. Among the guests was the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon Shirley Botchwey, who said:

“This cricket celebration is particularly meaningful because it brings leaders, young people and communities together through a shared Commonwealth tradition. With 1.6 billion people across the Commonwealth under the age of 30, their participation is especially important. This cricket series demonstrates the power of sport to unite people across the Commonwealth, bringing our shared values to life and strengthening the partnerships and friendships that connect our nations.

Future stars in the spotlight

The Commonwealth Future Stars Under 23 T10 Match also put emerging talent at the centre of the celebration. With 1.6 billion of the Commonwealth population under the age of 30, the fixture highlighted the importance of investing in youth, expanding opportunity and nurturing future leaders. Speaking at the end of the series, one of the young players expressed his delight in being "given an opportunity to be a part of the match".

Under the banner “One Commonwealth, One Team”, the series turned shared values into a shared experience. By bringing leaders, young people and communities onto the same field, it demonstrated how trust, teamwork and collective endeavour can strengthen connections across the Commonwealth.

Held every two years, CHOGM is the Commonwealth’s principal forum for setting common priorities and advancing action for its 2.7 billion people. The cricket celebration carried that spirit beyond the formal meeting rooms, providing a tangible and memorable example of co-operation in action.
