Health Ministers, senior government officials, global health leaders and advocates will join the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon Patricia Scotland KC, for the 36th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (36CHMM). The meeting will be held on 24 and 25 May 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, on the margins of the 77th World Health Assembly.

Hosted by the Government of Kiribati, the 36CHMM will be convened under the theme: "Actionable Solutions to Building Resilience in Healthcare Systems within the Commonwealth, with an Emphasis on Small and Vulnerable States". The two-day meeting will examine:

  • Practical solutions needed to strengthen the resilience of healthcare systems across the Commonwealth;
  • Interventions that will enable all countries, particularly fragile, small and vulnerable states, to effectively prevent, detect, respond to and recover from public health crises and other shocks;
  • The climate and health nexus as well as opportunities to build integrated and resilient health systems;
  • Avenues to bolster the capabilities of the health and social care workforce for more resilient health systems.

Discussions during the meeting will also focus on how to take actions forward following the COP28 Health Declaration and the recently-launched 2023 WHO Operational Framework for Building Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Health Systems.

35th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting, 2023

Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting 2023

At the 35th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in 2023, ministers acknowledged the grave and existential threat of climate change to the least developed countries and Small Island Development States (SIDS) in the Commonwealth.

The Ministerial Statement agreed at the last meeting underscored the need for an integrated agenda to align evidence-based, innovative and sustainable solutions that can assist in minimising the negative impacts of climate change on health.

Ministerial commitments

This year’s meeting will reach a consensus on Commonwealth ministerial commitments for action on health, accelerate action and build momentum following recent United Nations High-Level Political Declarations on Universal Health Coverage, Pandemic Prevention Preparedness and Response and the COP28 Declaration on Climate and Health.
