The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, welcomes the signing of a peace and reconciliation agreement between the governing party Frelimo and the opposition Renamo on 6 August 2019. Since the Secretary-General’s visit to Mozambique in August 2017, she has continued to engage the leadership of Mozambique on achieving enduring peace as a shared Commonwealth goal. The Commonwealth stands ready to support the people of Mozambique as they chart a pathway for peace, prosperity and reconciliation.
Mozambique joined the Commonwealth in 1995. The agreement signed between the two sides this week is a significant step in ending decades of hostilities between the two parties.
