Commonwealth observers have been deployed across Mozambique, as voters elect a new president, parliamentarians, and provincial representatives.

Observers arrived at their various provincial deployments two days to polling day, to meet stakeholders and observe pre-poll arrangements, including at Maputo City, Maputo Province, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Nampula, Zambezia, and Tete.

Commonwealth Observer Group Chairperson, former Prime Minister of Saint Lucia the Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony, is following the process from the capital.

He was present at the Escola Secundaria Josina Machel polling station when voting began at 7am and will observe the process until polls close at 6pm. He said:

“We are in Mozambique to uphold and fulfil an important value and aspiration of the Commonwealth Charter. As an impartial watchdog, our group will assess whether the election meets crucial democratic benchmarks for credibility, transparency, and inclusivity.

Our commitment to the democratic values and principles in Mozambique dates back to 1995 when the country joined the Commonwealth, and we have observed elections here since then.”

Over 17 million people have registered to vote, with more than 36 political parties participating at various levels.

Four candidates are contesting the presidential election, which operates a two-round system. The 250 members of the country’s Assembly are elected through proportional representation in eleven multi-member constituencies, based on provinces.

Marcia, a civil servant, was enthusiastic about casting her ballot, and hoped for a smooth process until the result counting phase.

"I see observers everywhere," she said. "and it makes us very happy, I think their presence will help discourage electoral fraud. Our thanks to the Commonwealth observers, and others, for coming to our country".

The Commonwealth Observer Group will release its preliminary findings in a statement on October 11, 2024.
