Commonwealth Secretary-General arrives in Morocco

2023 IMF and World Bank Meetings

A delegation led by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, arrived today in Marrakesh, Morocco for the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting (CFMM) and the Commonwealth Central Bank Governors (CCBG) Meeting.

The meetings are being held on the sidelines of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings.

At the 2023 Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting (CFMM), which is scheduled to take place on 11 October, the Secretary-General will convene finance ministers to discuss emerging economic challenges facing Commonwealth countries. CFMM will focus on urgent reforms needed in the global financial system to overcome challenges caused by economic fragility, geopolitical tensions, and climate-related disasters.

The CCBG, taking place on October 10, will focus on 'Assessing the Role of Central Banks in Building Resilience to Climate Change,' and the agenda will encompass discussions surrounding the multifaceted ways through which Central Bank Governors can contribute to climate resilience and the mobilisation of green financing.

During her visit to Marrakesh, the Secretary-General will also hold bilateral meetings with ministers and key interlocutors on the Commonwealth’s most pressing issues and priorities.

On arrival in Marrakesh, Secretary-General Scotland said:

“In a world shadowed by interlocked crises, the Commonwealth is committed to addressing the widening finance gap that threatens development and climate action. We gather in Marrakesh amidst global challenges, with a clear consensus that our Commonwealth unity and solidarity will guide us through these storms.”

The Secretary-General will depart Marrakesh on 14 October 2023.

Media Pools

Although the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting and Central Bank Governors meeting are closed meetings, a media pool of 10 journalists can take photos and videos of the opening remarks (the first 15 minutes of the meeting).

  • The CFMM media pool will take place from 12:00 – 12:15 pm Moroccon time on Wednesday 11th October.
  • The CCBG media pool will take place from 12:30 to 12:40 pm Moroccon time on Tuesday 10th October.
