A series of high-level meetings in New York will bring together representatives from across the Commonwealth for vital discussions ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in less than 50 days.
These strategic conversations, taking place in the margins of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), are crucial for preparing for CHOGM, scheduled for 1 – 4 November 2026 in St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon Shirley Botchwey will participate in various engagements throughout the week, including the 74th Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) Meeting.
Ahead of her arrival, Secretary-General Botchwey stated:
“For us all – from small states to major economies - this is an opportunity to renew our commitment to multilateralism and to deliver real progress for people across the world.
As leaders gather in New York and the Commonwealth prepares for CHOGM 2026, we must jointly chart a path to strengthen peace, unlock opportunities for growth and prosperity, and protect the planet we share.”
On Sunday, 20 September, the 74th Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) will meet to discuss political developments across the Commonwealth, relating to democracy, the rule of law, good governance and other fundamental principles embedded in the Commonwealth Charter.
CMAG, established by Heads of Government to act as the custodian of the Commonwealth’s political values, will be chaired by Honourable Chris Fearne MP, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Malta.
While in New York, the Secretary-General will meet with Heads of Government, ministers and other key stakeholders ahead of the upcoming summit in Antigua and Barbuda.
