The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, warmly congratulates the President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo, following a successful election.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, warmly congratulates the President-Elect of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo, following a successful election. The Secretary-General said:

"President-Elect Nana Akufo Addo is a longstanding friend of the Commonwealth, and I am delighted now to welcome him to the highest level of leadership in our family of member states."

The Secretary-General commended outgoing President John Dramani Mahama for graciously making way for Ghana's new transition to begin. "The Commonwealth has greatly valued President Mahama's leadership and contributions to our association. He has been and remains an eminent statesperson of Ghana, of Africa and of the Commonwealth."

Echoing the commendations by the Commonwealth Observer Group chaired by His Excellency President Thabo Mbeki, the Secretary-General praised the people of Ghana, the Electoral Commission, political parties, citizen observers, the media and the security forces for their respective roles in ensuring the success of the elections. She remarked: "Ghanaians have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to national and Commonwealth values of peace, democracy and respect for diversity. The maturity of Ghana's democracy is to their credit and that of their leaders."
