The Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub (CCFAH), in partnership with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat is hosting a training session to strengthen the technical capacities of project development specialists, GEF Operational Focal Points and climate finance advisers supporting the development of funding proposals across Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

Background

Vertical funds such as the Special Climate Change Fund (SCCF) and the Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) are a lifeline for many vulnerable countries adversely impacted by climate change.

For SIDS, vulnerability is compounded by geographical location, challenging topography, underlying socio-economic factors, limited access to highly concessional financing and exclusion from LDC funding opportunities. Technical and institutional capacity gaps, complex fund requirements, and increasingly rigorous technical review standards add to this tenuous situation.

These challenges and barriers are further exacerbated by recurrent climate shocks, which trap SIDS in vicious cycles of climate disasters and significantly inhibit their ability to mobilise domestic and private finance. Therefore, strengthening technical and institutional capacity and supporting countries to navigate complex fund requirements and meet increasingly rigorous technical review standards become critical.
