The role older women play in supporting families and building communities cannot be over-emphasised.
However, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges such as domestic violence and age discrimination, which pose a major disadvantage to older women, have been exacerbated and brought to the fore.
Older people are not only at a higher risk for severe illness and fatality from COVID-19 but are also more vulnerable to the challenges posed by the pandemic impacting their mental wellbeing and social security.
Against this backdrop, the Secretariat and Commonwealth partners are hosting a virtual event to understand the unique experiences of older women in intergenerational relationships across the Commonwealth and how their crucial role is being affected by the pandemic.
Panellists will discuss policy measures and good practices to support member countries in building forward better and safer for everyone, particularly for the vulnerable groups, in recovery from the pandemic.
