Their World, Their Future, Action Now was an event co-hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat with the University of Cambridge’s Resilience and Sustainable Development Programme (RSDP).

It focused on how to invest in the next generation of young people to tackle climate change.

The event, on 15 October, 2020, was held amid the backdrop of climate change posing an existential threat to humanity and young people feeling the urgent need for change especially acutely.

Anxious about their future, we have seen young people increasingly willing to make their voices heard, to take action and to hold those in power to account.

The event discussed how this powerful force can be harnessed for the public good and how young people can be helped to fulfil their potential and channel their energies to create real impact.

As well as the Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, other speakers were:

  • Lord Turner of Echinswell, chairman of the Energy Transitions Commission
  • Dr Nazia M Habib, founding director, RSDP, University of Cambridge
  • Dr Emily Shuckburgh, is director of Cambridge Zero at the University of Cambridge

The event was chaired by Andrew Mitchell, the UK’s former International Development Secretary and a senior fellow of the RSDP at Cambridge.
