Health ministers from across the Commonwealth will convene in Switzerland for the 37th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (37CHMM). The meeting will be held on 17 May 2025 before the World Health Assembly, which starts on 19 May 2025 in Geneva.

Chaired by the Government of Lesotho, the 37CHMM will be convened under the theme: “Investing in Health: Sustainable Financing for an Equitable Commonwealth”. It will bring together health ministers, senior government officials, and global health leaders from across the Commonwealth and will examine:

  • Innovative financing models and approaches for strengthening healthcare systems and fostering health equity
  • Advocate for adequate investment to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to improve health outcomes for the people of the Commonwealth
  • Practical solutions to bolster climate resilience and promote healthy ageing
  • Approaches for scaling up the uptake of digital tools to facilitate data-driven decision-making and increase access to healthcare services

The world is confronted by major health challenges including pandemics, non-communicable diseases, and climate change impacts, exacerbated by economic pressures that hinder effective healthcare funding. Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) requires sustainable financing to enhance health infrastructure and services, ultimately leading to more resilient health systems that ensure equitable access to necessary care without financial hardship.

At the 36th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in 2024, ministers committed to enhancing health system resilience across the Commonwealth, particularly for small and vulnerable states, to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health security. They emphasised the need for strong, well-funded, and environmentally sustainable health systems to ensure equitable access to healthcare for everyone.

The 37th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting will advance discussions on building resilient and equitable health systems through sustainable financing and will seek to expedite the outcomes of the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. This includes establishing a Commonwealth vision for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health in preparation for the 2025 UN General Assembly, alongside actionable plans for healthy ageing.
