The Commonwealth Secretariat is hosting its first Fintech Week from 28 September to 2 October.
Financial technology, shortened to fintech, describes developments and innovations to enhance financial services, making them easier to use, less expensive and more accessible to a wide range of people.
Bank account ownership in the Commonwealth has nearly doubled in the past 10 years, driven in large part by technologies such as digital financial services and mobile banking.
Digital identities and cryptocurrencies have the potential to help the 500 million adults that still do not have bank accounts gain financial inclusion.
To highlight how fintech is being used across the Commonwealth to advance development goals and to showcase our own key work in this area, the Commonwealth Secretariat will be running a series of events over the five days, including podcasts, blogs and videos.
The headline event of the week will be the video launch of the Commonwealth Fintech Toolkit.
The Toolkit provides governments with technical guidance on fintech topics and offers a framework for building an enabling environment including legislation, regulation, institutions and policies.
It aims to help Commonwealth countries use fintech to address development challenges in a modern and efficient way.
The week will also feature a live panel discussion about fintech and Covid-19 which will take place on 1 October, from 2-3pm BST. Register here.
