Water actions for health and climate resilience seminar series
This seminar series will examine the intersections between water, health, climate, and human development, which are extremely complex and, in many cases, poorly understood. Extreme weather events—like heatwaves, droughts, and floods can have direct impacts on human health or on infrastructure critical for ensuring water and sanitation services. They can also alter the virulence or distribution of infectious diseases and contribute to food and water scarcity or contamination.
Many of these events can have a profound impact on mental health and well-being, which can, in addition to its direct effects, prevent people from taking action on longer term goals, such as climate mitigation. Those without access to healthcare, or generally more vulnerable or water insecure, will be at greatest risk.
The series will focus on identifying specific water actions to build social and institutional resilience and strengthen infrastructure to protect and improve human health and well-being while addressing the root causes of climate change.
Expected outcomes
- Understanding the pathways between water, health and climate and the need to consider health in climate and water actions
- Identifying specific water actions that can be taken to improve public and environmental health risks introduced by climate change
- Exploring opportunities for building political will and increasing financial commitment to climate-related water actions that address health
