I have been monitoring the unfolding situation in the Federal Republic of Nigeria with great concern. The violence and tragic loss of lives in various parts of the country during the ongoing protests is deeply troubling.

I encourage restraint and urge the government to continue to anchor its actions on the Commonwealth values of peace, respect and dialogue that defines us, and for all parties to engage in meaningful and inclusive dialogue as a bridge through which to navigate this period of unrest.

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a long-standing member of the Commonwealth family.  We are committed to working with you and I reaffirm my readiness and that of the Commonwealth to Nigeria and its people in the pursuit of sustainable solutions for peace, stability, and development. I am resolute in my faith that together, we can weather this time of uncertainty.
