We have been closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and talking to various parties to quickly obtain reliable information. I continue to be concerned about ongoing developments, particularly the violence and loss of life. My thoughts are with all those who are affected. I urge all to discourage violence and to nurture mutual respect and understanding.

Bangladesh holds a treasured place in the Commonwealth, our family of nations which is committed to the shared values of our Charter. These include the values of inclusiveness, tolerance, transparency, accountability, and legitimacy. The Commonwealth Secretariat stands ready to assist the people of Bangladesh in upholding human rights, the rule of law, and the letter and spirit of the Constitution of Bangladesh.

I offer my full support and engagement to help to facilitate a sincere and constructive dialogue, which will strengthen constitutional order and democratic governance. The courage, resilience and love of the people of Sonar Bangla demand our utmost efforts for a peaceful, stable and united Bangladesh.
