Commonwealth leaders endorse top Indian diplomat for another four years in office.
Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma was re-appointed to a second term in office by leaders at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia.
This was announced at the conclusion of the three-day summit of Commonwealth leaders on 30 October 2011.
The Secretary-General, who took office in April 2008, will begin his second four-year term in April 2012.
"I am deeply appreciative of the confidence shown in me by leaders in appointing me to serve this great global good for a further term. I look forward with enthusiasm and commitment to doing so," said Mr Sharma.
He was first appointed to the post of Commonwealth Secretary-General by leaders at the 2007 CHOGM in Kampala, Uganda. Mr Sharma previously served as India's High Commissioner to the UK.
Prior to that, Mr Sharma served as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Timor Leste.
He had also served as India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva and before that, as Ambassador and the Indian Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.
Mr Sharma began his career in the Indian Foreign Service in 1965.
