The Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has congratulated Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad following successful elections in Malaysia on 9 May. Dr Mahathir has now been sworn in as Malaysia’s new prime minister. At 92, he is the world’s oldest elected leader. It is the first time that an opposition leader has been elected prime minister since Malaysia gained its independence 61 years ago.
The Secretary-General has also commended the people of Malaysia for the manner in which they participated in the electoral process. She looks forward to working closely with the new government to deepen and expand engagement by Malaysia in the many expressions of Commonwealth collaboration and practical action.
