Sharma wraps up visit to India following high-level meetings

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has concluded his official visit to India following a series of high-level meetings in New Delhi.

In his talks with Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, the latter reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the Commonwealth, and assured the Secretary-General of New Delhi’s continued support to strengthen the role, profile and institutions of the association.

During his visit to the South Asian country since 26 August 2011, the Secretary-General also held talks with Vice-President Mohd Hamid Ansari; Minister of External Affairs S M Krishna; Minister of Finance Pranab Mukherjee; National Security Adviser Shiv Shankar Menon; Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai; Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sport Ajay Maken; and Chief Election Commissioner Dr S Y Quraishi.

In his meetings with interlocutors, the Secretary-General briefed them on the agenda for the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth, Australia, in October 2011, which includes reform of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, and the report of the Eminent Persons Group.
