Environmental, Social and Economic Development Provisions in Investment Contracts: A Resource for Government Lawyers in the Commonwealth.

This document is intended to help government drafters and reviewers of foreign investment projects and related contracts.

It specifically focuses on fairness and balance in investment relationships with respect to environmental, social, and economic development matters in order to maximise the sustainable development benefits and minimise the costs to government and citizens.

The webinar to launch this new resource will take place on Thursday, 25 March, from 2pm to 3pm GMT.

Panellists will discuss key provisions that government lawyers should include in contracts with foreign investors.

This session will be moderated by Francisca Pretorius, Adviser and Head of the Office of Civil and Criminal Justice Reform (OCCJR) at the Commonwealth Secretariat.

The panel will comprise:

  • Motoko Aizawa (author) is President of the Observatory for Sustainable Infrastructure and Chair of the District of Columbia’s Commission on Human Rights
  • Howard Mann (author) is an international lawyer, specialising in international investment law and sustainable development for over two decades
  • Tafadzwa Pasipanodya is a Partner in Foley Hoag LLP’s international litigation and arbitration department and Chair of its Africa practice.
  • Matthew Moorhead is a Legal Adviser in the OCCJR, Commonwealth Secretariat.
