Cyclone Winston: Secretary-General pledges Commonwealth solidarity with Fiji

Kamalesh Sharma, the Commonwealth Secretary-General expresses solidarity with Fiji following tropical cyclone.

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma expressed the Commonwealth family’s solidarity with Fiji following the loss of lives and devastation wrought by Tropical Cyclone Winston over the weekend.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life and devastation caused in Fiji by Tropical Cyclone Winston. I am calling on the Commonwealth family to provide support to Fiji through coordinated disaster relief in the aftermath of this crisis” he said, in a communication to the Prime Minister of Fiji, Hon. Frank Bainimarama today, conveying Commonwealth concern and support during this time of critical need.

The Commonwealth sees the vulnerabilities of its small states as a particular priority, with the Commonwealth's work in this area focusing on resilience and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
