The following statement was issued today by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC.

The Commonwealth is monitoring reports of the escalating tensions and worsening security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We are saddened by the loss of life, including amongst peacekeepers from Commonwealth nations, and by the ongoing suffering and displacement of civilians.

We join the international community in urging a cessation of hostilities and call on all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue, grounded in a shared commitment to peace, the rule of law, and respect for human rights and human dignity. Addressing the pressing humanitarian needs in Eastern DRC remains a clear priority.

We welcome the leadership of the East African Community (EAC) in convening an extraordinary summit and are encouraged by the proposed joint engagement between the EAC and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to find a lasting solution to this crisis. The Commonwealth stands ready to support all efforts towards peace and stability in the region.
