Commonwealth Secretary-General welcomes peaceful transition in Lesotho

London, 8 June 2012 – Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has welcomed the peaceful democratic transition in the Kingdom of Lesotho and congratulated Prime Minister Motsoahae Tom Thabane on assuming the leadership of the country, following the 26 May 2012 Parliamentary elections.

Mr Sharma said he looked forward to working with Prime Minister Thabane in continuing the practical partnership with the Commonwealth, aimed at advancing its values and principles, including democracy, development and respect for diversity. The Secretary-General also thanked outgoing Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili for ensuring a peaceful transition process, and for his contribution to the Commonwealth during his term in office.

A Commonwealth team led by the former Malawian President, Dr Bakili Muluzi, observed the May elections in Lesotho and said they were peaceful and credible. A full report on the findings of the Commonwealth Observer Group will be made available in due course.
