Commonwealth Secretary-General congratulates new Indian Prime Minister

Kamalesh Sharma has conveyed his congratulations to Narendra Modi on the impressive victory of his party in India's recent General Elections

In a message to Mr Modi, Mr Sharma conveyed his best wishes to Prime Minister Modi for success in his role as Prime Minister and looked forward to working with him and his government, highlighting that India was a founding and valued member of the Commonwealth.

The Secretary-General also commended the Election Commission of India for organising such a smooth and efficiently run electoral process in the world's largest democracy. He said that managing a trouble-free election for an electorate of over 800 million people across a vast country, over a period of five weeks, was a truly remarkable feat that had won the admiration of the Commonwealth and the international community as a whole.
