Statement by the Commonwealth spokesperson on the current situation in Malawi

Speaking on the current situation in Malawi a Commonwealth spokesperson said:

“The Commonwealth family is deeply concerned about the stalemate between the executive and the judiciary in Malawi. We urge all stakeholders to adhere to the Constitution. Malawi has traditionally been faithful to our Commonwealth values, such as respect for the rule of law and judicial independence.

“As Malawi prepares to hold its fresh presidential election, I would like to encourage all political actors and stakeholders to respect these values and follow faithfully and loyally the spirit and the letter of Malawi’s Constitution. For democracy to be sustainable, trust must be founded on transparency and fairness.

“The Commonwealth Secretariat stands ready to support Malawi in implementing its democratic commitment under the Charter and the Commonwealth (Latimer House) Principles on the three Branches of Government.”
