Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting 2016

Event date: 22 May 2016, 8:45 - 13:00

The Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting took place in Geneva on 22 May 2016 under the theme, ‘Health Security and access to Universal Health Coverage’.

The Commonwealth is working to help member countries address non-communicable diseases, the migration of health workers and maternal and child health by strengthening their health systems.

On 22 May 2016, the Commonwealth hosted its annual Health Ministers Meeting in Geneva, under the theme, ‘Health Security and Access to Universal Health Coverage’. The meeting was chaired by Canada's Minister of Health, Jane Philpott.

In view of the challenges of unexpected disease outbreaks and climate change, the meeting offered governments an opportunity for a frank exchange on global health security and emergency preparedness in the context of universal health coverage.

Ministers also discussed Commonwealth health priorities since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015.

This was the first Commonwealth ministerial meeting attended by Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland since she took office on 1 April 2016.
