Blue Dialogues Series: Enabling conditions for blue carbon projects in the Commonwealth

Event date: 26 March 2025, 13:00 - 14:30 (GMT)

We are excited to announce the next webinar in the Commonwealth Blue Charter Blue Dialogue series.

The Blue Dialogue series provides a platform for Commonwealth Blue Charter members to share their experiences and best practices in addressing ocean challenges, with a focus on national-level initiatives.

This webinar will explore the key legal and policy conditions necessary for developing blue carbon projects, particularly those focused on mangroves.

It will present insights from the Enabling Conditions Country Profiles, highlighting critical factors such as land tenure, carbon rights, national carbon registries, benefit-sharing agreements, and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) across eight Commonwealth countries:

  • Caribbean and Americas: Jamaica
  • Africa: Tanzania and Kenya
  • Pacific: Vanuatu, Australia and Papua New Guinea
  • Asia: Sri Lanka and Malaysia

Through expert discussions and knowledge exchange, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in creating effective blue carbon policies that support climate action and biodiversity conservation.

Speakers include:

  • Dr Rahanna Juman, Deputy Director, The Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), and focal point for the Mangrove Ecosystems and Livelihoods Action Group
  • Dr Stacy Baez, Senior Officer, Advancing Coastal Wetlands Conservation, The Pew Charitable Trusts
  • Dr Joseph Lang’at, Certification and Technical lead, Association for Coastal Ecosystem Services, Kenya
  • Professor Sevvandi Jayakody, Chair Professor of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Wayamba University, Sri Lanka
  • Maria Cecilia (Chechi) Pertuz, Policy Lead, Fair Carbon
