The Jamaica Second Tranche Renewable Energy and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Auction is a strategic energy initiative designed to support Jamaica’s target of achieving a 50% renewable energy generation mix by 2030. The procurement seeks the development of 300 MW of renewable energy generation capacity, paired with 150 MW/220 MWh of battery energy storage under a co-located project model. The programme builds on the success of Jamaica’s first renewable energy auction in 2023 and aims to strengthen grid reliability while diversifying the clean energy supplied to the national grid. Projects will be developed on a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis and supported by long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The initiative is supported by extensive grid studies to facilitate the efficient integration of renewable energy and battery storage technologies, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels and contributing to Jamaica’s sustainability and energy transition objectives.
Project overview
Investment opportunity
The procurement presents an opportunity to participate in one of the largest renewable energy and battery storage procurements in the English-speaking Caribbean. It offers developers, investors and financiers access to a transparent and competitive procurement process supported by Jamaica’s established regulatory framework. Investors may participate as renewable energy developers, Independent Power Producers (IPPs), equity investors, lenders, technology providers or strategic partners in the development of co-located renewable energy and battery storage facilities. The projects will benefit from 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) structured around both capacity and energy payments, providing long-term revenue certainty. The initiative builds on demonstrated market demand, with Jamaica’s first auction attracting bids that exceeded available capacity by a factor of five and achieving highly competitive pricing, highlighting strong investor confidence in the country’s renewable energy sector.
