Unlocking Pharmaceutical Manufacturing for the Caribbean, and Beyond

Project overview

AMA Medical Manufacturing Limited, in partnership with Barbados Pharmaceutical Inc., is developing an intravenous (IV) fluid manufacturing facility in Barbados. The facility will produce approximately 12 million IV fluid units annually using advanced aseptic form-fill-seal (AFFS) technology to support sterility, production efficiency and international quality standards. The project aims to strengthen Barbados' pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on imported IV fluids and other essential medical supplies. Local production is expected to improve access to critical healthcare products while supporting greater supply chain resilience. The facility will also serve regional markets across CARICOM and Latin America, contributing to the development of Barbados as a pharmaceutical manufacturing hub. In addition, the project will support the development of specialised local expertise in sterile manufacturing, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and quality assurance. Renewable energy options, including rooftop solar, are also being considered as part of the facility's development.

Investment opportunity

The project offers an opportunity to invest in the growing pharmaceutical manufacturing industry while addressing regional demand for essential medical supplies. With a USD 32 million project, the initiative is positioned to strengthen healthcare supply chains and expand Barbados' role in pharmaceutical exports across CARICOM, Latin America and the wider Global South. Investors can participate in developing local manufacturing capacity in a sector critical to healthcare supply security. Local production is expected to reduce reliance on imported IV fluids, lower costs by up to 50% for consumers and 20% for government procurement, and improve access to essential medical products. The project is also expected to create 147-214 direct jobs, with a further 100 residual jobs projected, while developing specialised local expertise. Sustainable design features, including solar energy and seawater cooling, further support efficient manufacturing and Barbados' green economy ambitions.
