Climate & Green Economy Climate: Cross-cutting

Project overview

The Lesotho Bamboo Biochar Development Project (LBBDP) is an innovative 5-year initiative aimed at transforming rural livelihoods, enhancing climate resilience, and driving environmental restoration through a private sector-driven circular economy model. Objectives: The project seeks to combat severe soil erosion, improve agricultural productivity, and generate sustainable green jobs by developing the native bergbambu value chain into biochar, renewable energy, and alternative fertilisers. Rationale & Need: Lesotho faces intense soil erosion, declining soil fertility, and chronic food insecurity driven by rugged terrain, climate stress, and high rural poverty. Reach & Impact: While leveraging the indigenous bergbambu found in high-altitude moist ravines, the project will also introduce other bamboo species better suited to areas where bergbambu is unsuitable, ensuring extended geographic reach and maximum impact.

Economic & development benefits

  • The project delivers profound economic and development benefits by establishing a circular economy model centred on sustainable bamboo value chains and biochar production
  • Intended Beneficiaries: Vulnerable rural communities in Lesotho, particularly smallholder farmers, women, and youth
  • Economic Benefits: Farmers can cut expensive synthetic fertiliser costs by over 50% through biochar-compost mixtures and achieve 10%-plus crop yield gains
  • The project generates local green jobs in biomass management, nursery propagation, pyrolysis operations, and value addition (such as renewable energy briquettes and traditional remedies), while unlocking new revenue streams via carbon credit markets
  • Development Benefits: It combats severe soil erosion, restores degraded land, retains vital soil moisture during dry spells, and provides alternative clean cooking fuels and renewable energy options to improve rural resilience and food security

Climate & resilience benefits

  • The project delivers vital short- and long-term climate impacts and resilience benefits for Lesotho
  • In the short term, it combats severe soil erosion and restores degraded land through sustainable bergbambu and multi-species cultivation
  • The highly porous nature of bamboo biochar acts like a sponge, retaining vital moisture during dry spells, boosting soil fertility, and enhancing agricultural resilience against climate shocks
  • Additionally, processing biomass via low-emission pyrolysis prevents open burning, immediately lowering local carbon and methane emissions while providing clean cooking fuels
  • Over the long term, the project locks carbon into a stable state for durable sequestration, enabling predictable access to carbon removal credits
  • It also eases heavy local reliance on slow-growing trees, protects native forests, and anchors a sustainable green circular economy
