New Road of the Moamba–Caia Corridor

Maputo, Gaza, Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado, Mozambique Africa

Transport & Logistics Climate: Adaptation

3,108 km N1 route linking southern, central and northern Mozambique

Project overview

The project builds alternative routes to the N1, Mozambique’s main national highway, over a length of 3,108 km linking the Southern, Central and Northern regions of the country and integrating the east–west corridor. It supports the Government’s four pillars for the road sector: conservation of road assets, increased infrastructure resilience, improved rural mobility and enhanced road safety. The road runs through Maputo, Gaza, Sofala, Manica, Tete, Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado. It is needed because the existing N1 is the main north–south link and is vulnerable to cyclones and floods, while production areas in the north are poorly connected to markets in the south.

Investment opportunity

The corridor requires USD 3.4 billion and the Government is seeking a PPP partner or concessionaire. Feasibility studies have been completed. The road connects production areas in Nampula, Zambézia and Cabo Delgado to markets in the south and to the Port of Maputo. This creates freight and passenger demand along a national-scale corridor. A concession structure would let investors design, build, finance, operate and maintain sections of the corridor over the long term. Investors and contractors can take part as concessionaires, equity sponsors in a PPP vehicle or lenders to the concession.
