The project involves the development of a world-class tourism destination featuring a 100-room luxury resort at Golden Sands, a 10-bed boutique lodge at Mfula Beach, an aquarium, recreational facilities and a conference centre. Tourism has been identified by the Government of Malawi as a strategic growth sector under the Urbanisation Pillar, with Mangochi and Cape Maclear designated as priority tourism development zones. The project will support the emergence of a secondary growth centre while enhancing the management, accessibility and attractiveness of one of Malawi’s most distinctive natural assets. By attracting domestic and international visitors, it will strengthen tourism’s contribution to economic growth, generate employment and business opportunities for local communities, and stimulate investment in supporting infrastructure and services. The project will also promote environmental sustainability, ecosystem conservation and responsible destination management, helping to preserve the area’s UNESCO World Heritage status for future generations.
