Energy Climate: Mitigation

Development of a 150 MW hydropower facility on the Sewa River

Project overview

Bekongor III is a 150 MW hydropower project on the Sewa River in Sierra Leone. The project is being developed by Odhav Multi Industries Ltd and has reached commercial close following the signing and ratification of the project agreement. Preparatory activities are underway, and the sponsor has engaged the Development Bank of Southern Africa to support the financing process. Once developed, the project will expand Sierra Leone’s renewable energy generation capacity, strengthen energy security, and help meet growing electricity demand. The project also supports the country’s transition to a lower-carbon energy mix by increasing the supply of clean, reliable power. With key contractual arrangements already in place and early-stage development activities progressing, Bekongor III presents an opportunity for investors and financing partners to participate in the delivery of a strategically important hydropower asset with significant long-term economic and infrastructure benefits.

Investment opportunity

Seeking a combination of DFI-led senior debt, sponsor equity, co-financing and credit enhancement facilities to support project delivery. The project also offers an opportunity for a strategic private-sector partner to support the completion of bankability updates, mobilisation of financing, EPC execution, and the long-term operation and maintenance of the plant under the agreed project framework.
