The following statement was issued today by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon Shirley Botchwey, on the upcoming 2026 general elections in Uganda.
The Commonwealth stands with the people of Uganda as they prepare for the presidential and parliamentary elections on 15 January 2026.
I am troubled by recent reports from the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights that point to restrictions on freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly, incidents of arbitrary arrests, abductions, and the use of force against opposition gatherings. I have also received, with concern, news of the suspension of public internet access by the Uganda Communications Commission ahead of the 15 January election.
These developments, occurring in the lead-up to polling day, give the Commonwealth cause for concern about the full realisation of the Commonwealth family’s shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
The Commonwealth urges all parties, including security forces, political actors, and citizens, to exercise maximum restraint, uphold due process, and ensure that every Ugandan can participate freely and safely.
In this critical moment, the Commonwealth stands ready to support the people of Uganda.
The Commonwealth encourages the national authorities, political leaders, civil society, and the electoral commission to promote transparency, inclusivity, and respect for fundamental freedoms. Together, we can ensure elections that reflect the true will of the Ugandan people and strengthen our family of nations.
