Statements by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC:

27 December 2024

Today I had a call with HE President Filipe Nyusi to discuss the situation in Mozambique.

I expressed my concern about the ongoing tensions, particularly the loss of life, and the renewal of violence following the declaration made by the Constitutional Council on 24 December 2024. I reiterated the need for the Mozambican security forces to show restraint and to safeguard the lives of the people of Mozambique.

I equally call on all political parties and Mozambicans to uphold the principles of the Constitution, dignity, respect and good citizenship. I urge all to commit to sustainable peace and dialogue for the good of the nation.

I wish to express my gratitude to the president for the fruitful exchange today. I reiterated the Commonwealth’s readiness to offer unwavering support to Mozambique.

In the past few days, regrettable acts of violence in Mozambique have led to the deaths of civilians and police officers, many people injured, and the destruction of property as well as looting.

I stand together with the families and friends of those who lost their lives and condemn all forms of violence. I call upon all political party leaders and their supporters to remain calm and uphold principles of peace, dignity, respect and good citizenship.

Equally, I call on security services to exercise restraint in the use of force as they seek to maintain law and order and protect lives and property.

The Commonwealth stands ready to support all parties in Mozambique to work towards a peaceful solution to the crisis. We will work with other international stakeholders and regional organisations to achieve this goal.

We continue to monitor the situation in Mozambique following Monday's ruling by the highest court, the Constitutional Council, on the presidential election of 9 October 2024.
