Arriving in Malaysia, you are immediately enveloped in the warmth and hospitality for which the country is renowned. Visitors are greeted with gracious smiles and respectful bows, offering an introduction to the country’s cultural ethos. This welcoming spirit extends seamlessly beyond points of arrival, resonating throughout all aspects of Malaysian society—particularly in the nation’s dedication to its youth.
The journey continues with a 60-minute drive through the dynamic cityscape, where contemporary skyscrapers rise amid lush, tropical greenery. The destination is the International Youth Centre (IYC), an agency overseen by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. In November 2025, the IYC assumes its role as the central venue for two prominent Commonwealth events, the 5th Global Youth Work Conference and the 10th Commonwealth Youth Ministerial Taskforce meeting, which preceded it on 16 November 2025.
The approach to the IYC is marked by a vibrant mural that adorns its entrance. This striking artwork, infused with colour and energy, melds the themes of youth empowerment and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Graceful hospitality meets vibrant youth empowerment
The centre is an environment designed to foster growth and innovation. Expansive lawns and open spaces facilitate gatherings of young individuals, who engage in constructive dialogue and collaborative endeavours. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation and youthful energy as the centre welcomes visitors from five regions of the Commonwealth.
Its facilities will operate at full capacity, hosting over 250 delegates attending the 5th Global Youth Work Conference from 17-19 November 2025. This event, held for the first time in Asia, is co-hosted by the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Alliance of Youth Workers Association, and Universiti Putra Malaysia through its Institute for Social Science Studies. The conference gathers youth leaders, practitioners, and visionaries who share a collective commitment to advance youth work.
Pathma Seelan Subramaniam, Deputy Director at the International Youth Centre for over five years, reflects on the centre’s longstanding reputation. He shared:
“The IYC possesses more than 35 years of experience in hosting high-level dignitaries and international delegations. Equally, we are dedicated to accommodating student delegations in our purpose-built hostels and providing the necessary infrastructure for their programmes, camps, workshops, and developmental activities. The IYC is a focal point for youth development, both nationally and internationally.”
Within its walls, the centre presents a distinguished visual experience. Artistic tapestries decorate the interior and embody the centre’s commitment to inclusivity and creative ambition. A volunteer remarks that many pieces on display were produced by those who have benefited from the centre’s initiatives.
Jadzreill Jaafar, a young professional in IYC’s Programme Department, commented:
“Working with young people has been truly meaningful. I connect with diverse youth through leadership programmes, international exchanges, and community initiatives. I see how capable they are when provided with the right guidance and opportunities. Their energy, ideas, and dedication continue to motivate us to enhance youth development and SDG-aligned work at IYC.”
It is common to see teenagers as young as 10 to 15 huddled in groups, engaging in activities ranging from craft sessions and singing lessons to exam preparation.
A young student said:
“This is one place I come to be part of something greater than myself. I learn, I laugh, and I share. Beyond simply participating, I see myself growing every day. The activities challenge me to think creatively, and the supportive environment encourages me to step out of my comfort zone, contribute my ideas, and take on leadership roles.”
Malaysia will officially redefine its youth age bracket from 15–40 years to a more focused 15–30 years by 2026, signalling a clear, intentional investment in the dynamism and potential of its younger generation and ensuring that policies and opportunities are focused on those who need it most.
