The following statement was issued today by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, on the announcement of the co-honourees of the 2025 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity: Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados, the non-profit organisation World Central Kitchen, and 15-year-old inventor Heman Bekele.
The Secretary-General said:
I especially congratulate my dear sister, Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. Jointly receiving the 2025 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is a testament to her unwavering dedication to global harmony and sustainable development.
As the first female Prime Minister of Barbados, she has consistently demonstrated visionary leadership, guiding her nation with integrity and foresight.
Her tenure has been marked by transformative initiatives, including the historic, calm transition of Barbados to a republic, reflecting her commitment to national sovereignty and progressive governance whilst continuing to play a leading role in the Commonwealth.
Beyond her national achievements, Prime Minister Mottley has emerged as a formidable advocate on the international stage. Her impassioned addresses at the United Nations General Assembly have resonated worldwide, highlighting the urgent challenges of climate change and the imperative for global cooperation. Her leadership in the ‘Bridgetown Agenda’ embodies her dedication to reforming international financial systems to better address the pressing issues of our time.
The Zayed Award not only honours her individual contributions but also symbolises the broader aspirations of those striving for a more just and peaceful world.
Prime Minister Mottley’s relentless pursuit of equity, environmental stewardship, and social justice serves as an inspiration to leaders and citizens alike. I celebrate a leader whose vision and actions continue to pave the way for a brighter, more harmonious future.
