The following statement is issued today, 26 June 2025, by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon Shirley Botchwey, on the ongoing demonstrations in the Republic of Kenya.

I am following with deep concern the unfolding events across Kenya as citizens mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic June 25 protests that claimed lives of young Kenyans.
My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and with all Kenyans. I implore all actors to uphold the rule of law and exercise their rights within constitutional limits.
The Commonwealth further reiterates the importance of upholding the values enshrined in our Charter - including peace, democracy, the rule of law and the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
I urge all stakeholders – demonstrators, security services, government institutions and political leaders – to act with restraint, dignity and mutual respect.
In this context, I underline the importance of transparency, especially during times of national reflection and public mobilisation. A free and responsible media plays a vital role in strengthening democracy and ensuring accountability.
Kenya is a valued member of the Commonwealth family. I encourage inclusive dialogue, accountability, national unity and democratic resilience.
The Commonwealth stands ready to support Kenya in promoting justice, responsive governance, and lasting peace for all.
