A Commonwealth Observer Group (COG) has arrived in The Bahamas to observe the 2026 General Elections, underscoring the Commonwealth’s continued commitment to supporting credible, inclusive and transparent democratic processes across its member countries.

Chairing the Group is former Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon. Bruce Golding, a returning leader who previously led a similar Commonwealth mission during the 2021 general elections. Reflecting on his return, he highlighted the importance of continuity in strengthening democratic institutions. He said:

"It is an honour to be back in The Bahamas to observe these elections once again. Having previously led a team here in 2021, it is particularly important to observe what has changed since the last election, whether in electoral administration, voter engagement or procedural reform.

"This enables us to assess not only the integrity of the current process but also the progress made within The Bahamas’s democratic journey."

The Observer Group was constituted following an appointment by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon Shirley Botchwey. The Chair is joined by a small team of distinguished experts from across the region, bringing experience in electoral administration, law, politics and media.

The Group arrived in Nassau on 4 May and will remain in the country until 18 May. During this period, observers will engage with a broad range of stakeholders, including election officials, political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies and members of the diplomatic community.

The Group’s mandate is to observe the electoral process independently and impartially. It will assess all aspects of the electoral cycle, including preparations, polling day procedures, and the counting and transmission of results, against international standards and the country’s democratic commitments.

The Group’s assessment will extend beyond election day, covering pre-election and post-election activities. It will also consider the extent to which the process aligns with The Bahamas’s national and international commitments to democracy.

Observer teams will be deployed across the islands to observe pre-election preparations, and observe voting, counting and result management on election day. Following election day, the Group will issue an interim statement on 14 May outlining its preliminary findings.
