The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has called on Malawians to respect the judgement delivered by its Constitutional Court on the petition challenging the outcome of the general election held on 21 May. The judges decided that a new vote should be held within 150 days.
The Secretary-General said: “It is the Commonwealth way to pursue electoral grievances through prescribed legal processes. I commend Malawi for allowing the rule of law to take its course. I urge all stakeholders in the electoral process, including the people of Malawi, to uphold the rule of law and prioritise peace and social cohesion.”
The Secretary-General added: “The Commonwealth will continue to support Malawi as it further consolidates and strengthens its electoral democracy.”
