The Impact of COVID-19 on the Rule of Law in the Commonwealth

The Commonwealth Secretariat is hosting a series of online webinars focusing on COVID-19 and the Rule of Law.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected justice systems in all regions of the Commonwealth and has had significant impact on various aspects of the rule of law. Experts from across the Commonwealth will share experiences and reflect on how to protect the rule of law amidst the consequences of the pandemic.   

Topics to be addressed will include the legality of legislative provisions, human rights protections, law enforcement, judicial independence, court transformation, and access to justice.

The first webinar, ‘The Impact of COVID-19 on the Rule of Law in the Commonwealth’ will launch the series and will be held on Tuesday 28th July at 11:00am (BST)Register to attend.

During a roundtable discussion, a distinguished panel of guests will discuss the effects and impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on all areas affecting the rule of law in Commonwealth countries.

The webinar will be moderated by Professor Luis G. Franceschi, Senior Director, Governance and Peace Directorate, and will feature the following high profile speakers:

  • The Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland QC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth
  • The Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte QC, Attorney-General of Jamaica
  • Justice Charles Mkandawire, President of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association
  • Mr Brian Speers, President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association
