Commonwealth Officials to be Present for Third Phase of Pakistan Local Elections

The Commonwealth Secretary-General will be sending two officials for the third phase of the Pakistan local government elections, which will take place on 31 May 2001. The purpose of their presence in Pakistan will be to gain a first-hand impression of the process, after which they will report to the Secretary-General.
The two officials are Mr Charles Makobe, Manager of the Political Division of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), who has been nominated by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, and Ms Nishana Jayawickrama. She is a Senior Programme Officer in the Political Affairs Division of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Commonwealth officials were also present for the previous two phases of the local elections process, in December 2000 and March 2001 respectively.
