The “Together We End Violence Against Women” award will recognise and celebrate simple, innovative activities and practices that promote ending violence against women.

The “Together We End Violence Against Women” award will recognise and celebrate simple, innovative activities and practices that promote ending violence against women.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General will launch the annual award on the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November 2016.

It is hoped that the award will inspire member governments, NGOs, development partners and staff in Commonwealth organisations to prioritise actions to end violence against women and girls.

Who can be nominated for the award?

Any individual, section, unit or division in the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Foundation and Commonwealth accredited organisations (that have developed activities, projects or programmes, or created an enabling environment to support actions to end violence against women in the organisations or in member countries) are eligible to apply for the award.

Awards criteria

Entries will be assessed using the following criteria:

  • Thematic Relevance: Contextual, socio-cultural and gender sensitive to the challenges of violence against women.
  • Weaving togetherness: Enabling or encouraging collaboration for visible differences at level(s) of intervention.
  • Effectiveness: Demonstrates efficiency and sustainable use of resources.
  • Visionary: Demonstrates its far-sighting and potential in delivering lasting benefits for community with efforts to end violence against women and girls.
  • Aspirational: Shows that initiative has potential to effect lasting change(s) and impact could be measured through clear qualitative and quantitative indicators.
  • Winning: Demonstrates that the initiative is simple, practical, feasible and replicable in other Commonwealth members, and can promote good practice and/or influence policy agendas to end violence against women and girls.
Nomination process
  • Nominated by others: Individual(s)/project is/are nominated by staff of the Secretariat, Foundation or Commonwealth accredited organisations committed to end violence against women.
  • Self-nominated: Individual(s) working for the Secretariat, Foundation  or  Commonwealth  accredited organisations nominate himself/herself/themselves.
  • Calls for nominations: Will be made annually 2 months before 25 November starting in 2017.
Who assesses nominations?

A panel comprising representatives from the Secretariat and three Commonwealth accredited organisations. The assessment will be based on a detailed score card according to the criteria above.
