The Secretary-General has been meeting the Bangladeshi prime minister, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, at the United Nations in New York to discuss a variety of challenges facing the Commonwealth.

The Secretary-General has been meeting the Bangladeshi prime minister, Sheikh Hasina Wazed, at the United Nations in New York to discuss a variety of challenges facing the Commonwealth.

The two leaders spoke about the need to end extremism, increase the empowerment of women and young girls as well as climate change.They promised to work together to develop a toolkit of best practice in a number of areas, including trade, good governance, rule of law and to ensure religious and political freedoms across the Commonwealth.

Secretary-General Patricia Scotland said, "It's important everyone in the Commonwealth looks to each other to create a free and democratic family of nations. It was a pleasure to hear Sheikh Hasina's ideas and her promise to help us all."
